The Dos and Don’ts of Fibromyalgia

1. Do practice meditation- breathe

2. Do practice being mindful in all you do

3. Do exercise, even if just walking

4. Do take up a hobby that is new to you, creative and repetitious

5. Do have massage, or massage yourself lightly with a feather

6. Do practice self compassion

7. Do avoid too much stimulation

8. Do eat plenty of fruits and vegetables

9. Do avoid caffeine and alcohol

10. Do go to a therapist for talk therapy (if you can afford it)


1. Don’t allow anxiety to escalate into panic

2. Don’t become overly stressed

3. Don’t over medicate

4. Don’t remain a couch potato

5. Don’t spend time with people who are negative

6. Don’t over extend yourself or be afraid to say “no”

7.  Don’t partake in unproven ‘alternate’ therapies or take weird concoctions

8. Don’t over indulge on holiday excitement

9. Don’t expect a quick ‘cure’

10. Don’t forget to smile

I am a Professor Emeritus, School of Nursing, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. My in Nursing while my MA. and Ph.D. are in Sociology. I am married, a mother and grandmother living on the east coast of Canada. I have personally lived with fibromyalgia for about 40 years. I published a book with iUniverse in 2007. This book detailed living with this condition and allowed the voices of twenty women who have fibromyalgia to tell their stories.

    Just perfect, Barbara, and when we follow all these advices – and still go through hard times- I suggest one more “Do”: Trust and believe in miracles. And one more “Don`t”: Don`t ever give up!!!!!
